AUTOCAD 2019
In addition to AutoCAD and new applications, although perhaps not as many as in previous years, AutoCAD 2019 includes a number of enhancements and new features. In addition, many of the new 2019 features actually appeared in the 2018.1 incremental release.
One of the first things users will notice is a subtle change in the user interface. As part of an effort to update AutoCAD to look good at 2K (1080) and 4K (2160) resolutions, the program uses new, simplified “flat” icons that are easier to identify. The program automatically loads the appropriate icon set for the screen resolution. This visual simplification also extends to the Status bar, where blue button backgrounds make it much easier to determine when a particular setting is on or off.
Beyond these subtle differences, AutoCAD 2019 introduces a few new commands. Perhaps most notably, a new collection of Drawing Compare tools that allow users to easily identify graphical differences between two versions of any drawing. This tool is now part of AutoCAD, although similar tools already exist in some vertical versions of AutoCAD (such as AutoCAD Architecture).
Users can start a drawing comparison from the Application menu or from the Collaborate ribbon. After selecting two drawings to compare, the program analyzes them and displays the results as a new drawing with three categories of highlighted objects: only those found in the first drawing, only those found in the second drawing, and both drawings are the same. Users can then use tools in a contextual ribbon to adjust the comparison display, such as changing the order of the drawings, moving to the foreground, changing the display of both drawings, and changing the comparison color settings.
Other tools allow users to include or exclude text from comparison results and to remove objects from scan results. But by far the standout feature of the new Drawing Compare tool is the ability to automatically place revision clouds around changes and control how the program creates and displays these revision clouds.
SHAR DESIGNS WITH SECURITY
The new Shared Views feature in AutoCAD 2019 makes it easy for users to share designs with others without publishing the original drawing files. This feature is intended to replace the common workflow of publishing DWF or PDF files and then sending them by email. Instead, the views and data are extracted from the drawing and stored in the cloud. Users can then send a shareable link that allows the design to be viewed in a browser and commented on from any web-enabled desktop, tablet, or mobile device.
Recipients of the link can view, measure, comment, mark up, and share their feedback on the design. An email is sent when someone comments on the shared view. Users can then view and respond to comments and manage the shared view using tools in a new Shared Views palette. Shared views automatically expire after 30 days, but users can extend or terminate the connection at any time.
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS
AutoCAD 2019 also includes enhancements that make it easier to create and work with named views. While being able to create named views has long been a thing of the past in AutoCAD (and named views make it easier to navigate drawings), the big news here is that users can now quickly create named views and place them as paper space viewports by selecting any named view in a gallery. The program automatically applies an appropriate scale, resizes, and locks the viewport, essentially reducing a multistep process to a few simple clicks. Viewport grip improvements then make it much easier to move and resize viewports, and a new triangle grip lets users quickly change the viewport scale.
The Layer Properties manager has been enhanced to make it much easier to define and control overrides in layer properties. For example, a new status icon indicates that an xref layer or viewport layer contains overrides. When users pause over a layer that contains an override, a tooltip appears listing all of these overrides. Additionally, users can apply a background color to overridden layers and properties, and even assign different background colors to identify whether the override is applied to a layer in the host drawing or to an external reference. Users can then filter layers by overrides and use tools in the right-click menus to reset layer properties or all layer properties to their original values. Other improvements to layer settings make it easier to control xref layer properties.
