SERVER 2012 R2

Windows Server 2012 R2 is the sixth version of the Windows Server server operating system by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT operating systems family. It was introduced at TechEd North America on June 3, 2013 and published on October 18, 2013.

Another update, officially called Windows Server 2012 R2 Update, was released in April 2014. It is a cumulative set of security, critical, and other updates. Windows Server 2012 R2 is based on Windows 8.1 and runs only on x86-64 processors (64-bit).

FEATURES
The following features were introduced in Windows Server 2012 R2:

Automatic Tiering: Storage Spaces stores the most frequently accessed files on the fastest physical media.
Deduplication for VHD: Reduces storage space for VHD files with highly similar content by storing similar content only once

Windows PowerShell v4, which now includes a Desired State Configuration (DSC) feature
Integrated Office 365 support with Server 2012 R2 (Essentials edition)
User interface changes that reflect Windows 8.1, including a visible Start button

UEFI-based virtual machines
Upgrades from driver emulators to synthetic hardware drivers to minimize legacy support
Faster virtual machine deployment (approximately half the time)

Internet Information Services 8.5: Support for Event Tracing logging for Windows and logging any request/response headers. To improve scalability, if IIS is configured with 100 or more websites, it will not automatically start any of them by default. Additionally, a new "Idle Process Page Out" configuration option has been added to application pools to instruct Windows to page out the process if it has been idle for the idle timeout period (20 minutes by default).

Server Message Block: Performance and event log quality improvements, support for Hyper-V Live Migration over SMB, bandwidth prioritization management, and the ability to remove SMB 1.0 support

Server 2012 R2 Windows Deployment Services: Support for managing WDS via PowerShell.

Windows Defender is included in the Server Core installation and is installed and enabled by default.

IP Address Management (IPAM): Manages users' DHCP reservations, scopes, IP address blocks, DNS resource records, etc. It has been expanded to support role-based access control, allowing granular control over who can view or change configurations for IPAM. Additionally, IPAM integrates with System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 to have coordinated IP policy across both physical and virtual environments. The IPAM database can be stored in a SQL Server instance instead of the Windows Internal Database. Group Policy has a new "Policy Cache" setting that allows domain-joined machines to store a copy of group policy settings on the client machine and, depending on the speed of access to the domain controller, use them at startup instead of waiting for the policy settings to be downloaded. This can improve startup times on machines disconnected from the corporate network. Server 2012 R2 provides the ability to enable/disable SPDY/3 support in Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11, configure startup screen layouts, and detect phone numbers on web pages.

New Group Policy settings have been added to cover new features such as .

TLS support has been expanded to support RFC 5077, "Transport Layer Security (TLS) Session Resumption Without Server-Side State," which improves performance of long-running TLS-protected connections that must reconnect due to session termination.

The Hyper-V role and Hyper-V management console have been added to the Essentials edition.

Windows Server Update Services have been introduced for Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

ReFS has gained support for alternate data streams and automatic error correction in parity areas.
WINDOWS SERVER 2012 R2: MORE FLEXIBILITY AND AGILITY
At the heart of the Microsoft Cloud Operating System vision, Windows Server 2012 R2 brings Microsoft’s global cloud service delivery experience to your infrastructure with new features and improvements in virtualization, management, storage, networking, virtual desktop infrastructure, access and information protection, web and application platform, and more.

Windows Server 2012 R2 includes a robust set of technologies for optimum flexibility. Here are just a few:

1. WORK FOLDERS
Work Folders brings the functionality of Dropbox to enterprise servers. Install this role on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system and you get a fully functional, secure file replication service.

The initial release will support Windows 8.1 clients only. Support for Windows 7 and iPad devices is promised in the future, with Android clients further down the list. Like Dropbox, Work Folders keeps copies of files on both the server and the client, synchronizing them each time the client connects to the server.

2. DESIRED STATE CONFIGURATION
Maintaining configuration across multiple servers has been a challenge for system administrators for as long as anyone has been running multiple servers. Many point solutions and numerous specialized in-house tools have been designed to accomplish the task.

There is now a feature built into Windows Server 2012 R2 that makes it possible to programmatically create a baseline of roles and features, and then monitor and update any systems that do not meet the desired state. Desired State Configuration requires PowerShell 4.0, which provides a set of new cmdlets to perform both monitoring and management of specific states.

3. STORAGE TIERING
This may be the most exciting new feature in Windows Server 2012 R2. Essentially, Storage Tiering is the ability to dynamically move chunks of stored data between different storage classes, such as fast SSDs and slower hard drives. Many high-end storage systems have had automatic tiering for years, but this is the first time you’ve been able to do it at the operating system level.

Microsoft uses a heatmap algorithm to determine which chunks of data are seeing the most activity and automatically moves the “hottest” chunks to the fastest tier. You can adjust how and when data is moved using PowerShell.

4. WRITE-BACK CACHE
When you create a new storage volume in Windows Server 2012 R2, you also have the option to enable something called Write-Back Cache. This feature sets aside some physical storage, usually on a fast SSD drive, to use as a write cache to help smooth out I/O spikes and dips during write-intensive operations.

This can be seen in a typical database scenario where large disk writes can exceed the ability of the drive controller and disks to keep up. The cache eliminates stalls caused by an overloaded storage subsystem.

5. DEDUCATION OF WORKING VMs
Data deduplication in Windows Server 2012 is a nice feature, but one thing it can’t do is deduplicate running virtual machines. This limitation has been removed in Windows Server 2012 R2, though specifically for VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) deployments on SMB 3.0.

However, this new feature can greatly increase the overall efficiency of deduplication for VDI applications. As a side benefit, deduplication greatly improves the boot performance of virtual desktops.

In addition to storing VMs on SMB 3.0 (required), Microsoft strongly recommends using Scale-out File Server in Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2. Cluster Shared Volumes are supported for high availability.

6. WORKPLACE JOIN
Windows Server 2012 R2 addresses the need to include personal devices like iPads in the enterprise environment. At its simplest level, it is a new Web Application Proxy that allows you to provide secure access to internal corporate websites, including SharePoint sites, to any authorized user.

One step further, it allows users to enroll personal devices in Active Directory and use certificate-based authentication to

is a new feature called Workplace Join that allows single sign-on to applications and data.  Standard tools like Group Policy apply here to control conditional access on an individual or group basis.

7. WINDOWS SERVER ESSENTIALS ROLE
This may not sound like a big deal, but it has the potential to make life much easier for any organization with a geographically distributed network.  With Windows Server 2012, you need to use a completely different installation source for Windows Server Essentials.  For larger organizations, this can impact both deployment strategy and configuration management.

The Windows Server Essentials role in Windows Server 2012 R2 also brings a number of other features that are typically implemented in remote office settings, such as BranchCache, DFS Namespaces, and Remote Server Administration Tools.
