Originally released in Japan and later in the west with the alternative title NieR Gestalt for the PlayStation 3, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 tells the same story, but this time the main protagonist isn’t a father desperately trying to save his daughter, but instead a devoted brother, NieR, fighting to save his sister Yonah from the mysterious disease known as the Black Scribble. The support he receives comes in the form of Kanie, who has been infected with the Black Scribble, but that doesn’t stop him from becoming a dirty-talking monster destroyer. Grimoire Weiss, a magical book that speaks of who holds the key to curing the undead. The Black Scribble is Emil, a young boy with the ability to turn all forms of organic matter into stone, if only he could figure out how to do it. You can enjoy playing as each of these enigmatic characters at certain times throughout the story.
See the last legs of the human race in the dystopian world of NieR, the remnants of the surviving population have built small towns that you will visit in search of answers on how to cure the plague that is ravaging the people. You will be sent on side missions to get something or kill someone as requested to earn new weapons, rewards and unlock specific locations such as green pastures, a wasteland and arid desert, all of which have wildlife to hunt for raw materials, places to fish and places to mine metal, but they are also full of Shadow, the main enemies you must defeat and they come at you in numbers that make destroying them no easy feat.
Smooth, Fluid and Fun Controls
The biggest and best overhaul has to be said for the combat mechanics, I always found the original to be slow, clunky and unresponsive, which is honestly frustrating to say the least. Compare that to the smooth, fluid and fun controls that are now evident in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, where dodging an attack when you time it perfectly or deflecting a blow just as it’s about to land is the most satisfying with these incredible improvements that the game has brought to the table. The game is up to date with modern standards. The Spellbook Weiss can give you magical support for melee attacks or for keeping your enemies at bay, as I prefer long-range attacks like spear throws or energy blasts. The system gives you passive abilities that enhance your weapons and the Grimoire’s magical attacks. When you defeat Shades, you unleash words that increase your physical damage or increase the item drop rate, allowing you to get more unique items that escape you. The incredible boss fights are especially fun and challenging, each one is unique and requires you to figure out which attack type is effective against each boss.
The Way It Was Meant to Be Enjoyed
The original PlayStation 3 game, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, runs great on both PS4 and PS5 with stunning visual upgrades from a fantastic voice cast and a great soundtrack that can both be compared to any game on the market, every track is memorable and the well-written script only adds to the overall experience. So take this opportunity to enjoy a classic title the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
